Somaliland Spotlight: Leadership in Nursing

Health Education England (HEE) is working in collaboration with THET and the University of Salford (UoS) to deliver a two-year project aiming to strengthen nurse leadership through the creation of virtual communities within several different countries.
The ‘TALENT groups’ (Technically Assisted Learning and Education for Nursing and Midwife Teams) will bring nurses who have an interest in leadership development together into virtual communities which are coordinated by senior nurse leaders. Through online discussions with each other and their coordinators, by sharing ideas, knowledge, and by raising and helping each other to solve problems together, it is hoped that the early career nurses will build and develop their leadership skills.
We hear from Badra, TALENT Group Senior Nurse Coordinator, on the need for leadership development in Somaliland and why she’s looking forward to being part of this project.
“Leadership is a skill that is expected from all nurses, regardless of their job title and experience.
At the heart of their community, nurses are required to lead and manage care and fulfil many roles as soon as they have completed their training, with leadership being key to patient safety and quality of care. However, the development of leadership skills and the associated learning can be challenging, especially for less experienced nurses and those at the beginning of their careers.
In Somaliland, most Nurses and Midwives don’t have sufficient leadership capacity; this is because they work as bedside care providers, rather than in administrative positions. This programme will help early-career Nurses and Midwives to gain more leadership and management skills to fulfil that great need. Through online leadership training, it will also improve their skills in using different online platforms and a variety of social media channels.
I am fascinated to be one of the TALENT Group Senior Nurse Coordinators facilitating the leadership development and capacity building of the nurses and midwives. Sharing leadership and management skills that I have gained over the last 10 years from different work experiences, including clinical skills and academic experiences.
On top of that, the experience and the knowledge gained from the Nursing Now Challenge and the nursing community platforms will increase my confidence to share my skills with early-career Nurses and Midwives in my home country, Somaliland.
I will gain confidence, additional knowledge and experience from other TALENT Group team members, both on an academic level and from the different personal experience shared by the other Coordinators from other countries.”
