The International Day of the Midwife is a moment to celebrate, reflect, and advocate for the critical role midwives play in strengthening health systems and improving maternal and newborn outcomes. Under the global theme “One Million More Midwives,” this year’s commemoration calls for urgent investment in the midwifery workforce worldwide.

For the Nursing Now Challenge Africa Hub, this conversation is particularly timely. While the need for more midwives remains urgent, equal attention must be given to retaining the midwives already trained and practising across the continent. This session aims to centre African midwifery voices, creating space for shared experiences, practical insights, and forward-looking solutions. In doing so, it aims to contribute to a broader dialogue on how we can move beyond increasing numbers to building resilient, well-supported, and motivated midwifery systems in Africa.

By hearing directly from midwives working in diverse contexts, we hope to explore what it truly takes to support, sustain, and retain this vital workforce.

Workshop: Leading your legacy

To mark International Nurses’ Day 2026, the Nursing Now Challenge will host an inclusive virtual event designed to maximise accessibility for members and move beyond celebration towards meaningful action.

Building on the momentum of the State of the World’s Nursing report launch on International Nurses’ Day 2025, this event will focus on implementation, alignment, and collaboration - reinforcing the central role of nursing and midwifery in strengthening health systems and improving global health outcomes.

Following the success of the first Writing for Publication Workshop, led by Dr Rhoda Redulla in December 2025, we are delighted to bring you another Writing for Publication Workshop, this time featuring Dr Rhoda Redulla and Dr Ada Hui.

This workshop is designed for nurses and midwives who are ready to transform their clinical, quality improvement, or research work into scholarly publications. Participants will learn from two experienced editors and researchers and gain a practical understanding of the publication process - from identifying a publishable idea to selecting the right journal, structuring a manuscript, and navigating peer review.

As the world marks International Nurses Week under the theme “Empowering Nurses,” the Africa Hub of the Nursing Now Challenge seeks to focus the conversation on a critical question: What does empowerment truly look like for early-career nurses?

Following the global Nursing Now Challenge event, this session aims to contextualise key insights within the African setting, moving beyond high-level discussions to explore real, practical pathways for empowering the next generation of nurses. This event will bring together perspectives from academia, policy, and early-career practice on leadership, career progression, education, and system-level support. By centring the voices and questions of early-career nurses themselves, the goal is to inspire tangible steps toward building environments where early-career nurses can thrive, lead, and shape the future of healthcare in Africa.
